“When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.” ― Daniel Webster
If you are a local farmer, landscape contractor, or agri-business owner, do you take much comfort in the following? How does Virginia's impact on the Chesapeake Bay compare with other states like Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia? What is it going to cost every household, business, church, and farm operation in Hanover County?
McDonnell touts progress in bay cleanup Richmond Times Dispatch, Saturday, July 7, 2002 (excerpt):
"Virginia has also adopted legislation that will ban the use of phosphorus in fertilizers and is working with the state's 47 soil and water conservation districts to promote nutrient management and best management practices of agricultural lands.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has worked with farmers to limit pollution into the bay, such as fencing off streams from livestock that can foul the waters and repairing or replacing faulty septic systems."
AND MORE: "The center (University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science) gave the bay a D+ in 2011, citing the following: "Heavy spring and fall rains washed pollutants and sediments into the bay, and a hot, dry summer spurred algae blooms that lower oxygen levels."
Does the EPA have a contingency plan to control acts of God and the weather?
